tracing whitechapel

kamala katbamna in residence 9th-28th march 2009, with esther yarnold.
viewings 26th march 7-9pm, 27th march 12-5pm, 28th march 12-5pm, 3rd april 12-5pm, 4th april 12-5pm.

an immersive sound and visual map of whitechapel, adding depth and texture to the generic street maps we are familiar with. during the residency kamala will collect stories and perceptions of whitechapel via interviews with members of the local community, exploring both how the area impacts on their lives, and how they in turn contribute to its unique and distinct character. edited with ambient sound, these interviews will create a set of “sound stories”. each story will have its own narrative - and thus be able to stand in its own right, as well as contributing to a larger picture of the area. the photographer, esther yarnold, will document the people and places encountered through portraits and other images. each participant will also be invited to contribute a sketched map of their “patch” of whitechapel on whatever they have to hand - a receipt or envelope, perhaps.

the final installation will be a reflection of the personalized whitechapel - in sound, in image, and in maps.

this project is supported by the national lottery through arts council england. grateful thanks also to the ideas store, whitechapel.
